A Guide to Jeep® 4×4 Systems and How They Function
Do you want a vehicle that can support your off-roading or help you get traction during tough weather and road conditions? You will want a new Jeep® 4x4 vehicle. But with so many variations of Jeep® 4x4 systems, how do you know which to choose? Let Young Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Layton help you today.
What is a 4x4 System?
Jeep® 4x4 systems are either full-time or part-time. Part-time systems are generally for off-roading and low-traction needs. Part-time systems send power to all four wheels. Full-time systems are for low-traction surfaces and normal paved roads, adjusting power distribution as needed.
Jeep® Command-Trac 4x4
The Command-Trac 4x4 system is usually on Wrangler models and allows drivers to select two-wheel drive for daily use. Drivers can also shift into four-wheel drive for more traction. With low-range mode, this system multiplies torque for help traversing deep sand, mud, and other obstacles.

Jeep® Selec-Trac 4x4
Selec-Trac 4x4 systems are all about flexibility. Drivers can select between an automatic mode that continually adjusts power distribution between the front and rear axles, part-time four-wheel drive, and low-range modes. Selec-Trac is great for heavy rains or sandy conditions.

Jeep® Quadra-Trac Systems
Jeep® Quadra-Trac systems remain fully automatic for instant reactions to wheel slips. There are two types: Quadra-Trac I and Quadra-Trac II. A single-speed transfer case comes with Quadra-Trac I and requires no driver input. A two-speed transfer case comes with Quadra-Trac II for low-range gearing and off-road situations.
Jeep® Quadra-Drive II
The brand's most advanced system, Quadra-Drive II pairs electronic limited-slip differentials with a two-speed transfer case. This system sends power to axles and individual wheels when needed. Find Quadra-Drive II on the Grand Cherokee.
Jeep® Rock-Trac 4x4
The most extreme off-road system is the Rock-Trac 4x4. Heavy-duty axles, a low crawl ratio, and locking front and rear differentials are the highlights of this system. Rock-Trac 4x4 is ideal for precise terrain control. Find it on the Gladiator and other Rubicon models.
